Child Age:

Q1) What is the lower & upper age limit for all entry-level classes in Delhi School Admissions?

A1) For admission to the Private Unaided schools of Delhi, the age of the applicant is calculated as on 31 March of the year in which admission is sought.

General Category:

  • For Nursery/Pre-School: Between 3Yrs-4Yrs
  • For KG/Pre-Primary: Between 4Yrs-5Yrs
  • For Class 1:  Between 5Yrs-6Yrs
Old rule:
The child should be exactly between 3 years and 4 years as on 31 March 2021 to qualify for nursery admissions.
There are few children who are born on eg 5 April 2018 (child will be less than 3 years of age as on 31 March 2021) or 25 March 2017 (child will be more than 4 years as on 31 March 2021); till last year the schools would have rejected such applications and would not have accepted even a day’s difference.

New rule (Introduced in Admission year 2020-21):
As per the new rule there is a relaxation of 30 days, both of lower and upper age limit. Parents need to drop a manual application in the school.
Similarly for KG and 1st class admissions.
But the Schools are flouting this rule. We don’t have any exhaustive list of schools accepting April born children. You need to make that manual effort of reaching out to schools.

EWS/DG Category:

The DOE provides a relaxation of one year in the Upper Age limit for Children with Special Needs/Disabled Children Category. The mentally challenged applicants can further have a relaxation in the upper age limit post approval by the Principal on submission of the requisite documents. See below:

  • For Nursery/Preschool:
Physically Challenged –> Less than 5 years as on 31 March of the year in which the admission is sought
Mentally Challenged –> Less than 5 years as on 31 March of the year in which the admission is sought which can be further relaxed only by the Principal/HOS subject on submission of the requisite documents.
  • For KG/Pre-Primary:
Physically Challenged –> Less than 6 years as on 31 March of the year in which the admission is sought
Mentally Challenged –> Less than 6 years as on 31 March of the year in which the admission is sought which can be further relaxed only by the Principal/HOS subject on submission of the requisite documents.
  • Class 1:
Physically Challenged –> Less than 7 years as on 31 March of the year in which the admission is sought
Mentally Challenged –> Less than 7 years as on 31 March of the year in which the admission is sought which can be further relaxed only by the Principal/HOS subject on submission of the requisite documents.

The rejection of an application for relaxation in upper age limits (in case of a student with mental disabilities) should be based on valid grounds & a speaking order shall be passed by the Principal of the school. The parent/ child should have the right to appeal before the Director (Education) & before the principal secretary (Education) in the second appeal. The decision of the principal secretary shall be final & binding on all concerned.

Q2) My kid is just a few days short of 3 Yrs as on 31 March of the admission year (2 Yrs 11 Months 25 Days). Is he eligible for the nursery admissions in Delhi?

A2) Even if the kid is one day short of 3 years as, on 31 March of the admission, he/she is not eligible for the nursery admissions in private unaided schools of Delhi. The applicants belonging to EWS/DG category might get relations (See the first answer)
